Why is the problem the 10 or so games that players play during the summer in the olympics?
Isn't the real problem that the NBA season is too long when most players have to play about 90-100 games/season?

Your concern is that FIBA is using the players for it's own benefit. Players play hurt both in the NBA and in FIBA. The pressure and will to win is the same for an athlete no matter which uniform he wears.
What about all the youth national games that players play to gain skill and experience representing their country? That's where they improve to the point where they can play in the NBA and all of a sudden when they get draften they're not supposed to play for their country any more? Isn't that kind of hypocritical? Play for your country until we give you a uniform and then leave all that behind you.

The thing you are forgetting is that there are european top clubs that put their franchises on the line as well by letting their top players play in the olympics. Is the solution to make the olympics a national training camp where players from every country without a contract get to play. Who would watch that?
The olympics promote the sport in a way that no NBA top 10 countdown or NBA finals can do. Can you honestly say that the basketball world would be the same if the dream team hadn't been assembled in 1992? I think not.

The bottom line is that both the NBA and FIBA want the players to earn them money and neither seem willing to cooperate at the moment.
